Responsible harvesting also avoids chemical fertilizers and promotes sustainable regrowth cycles, which contribute to better fiber consistency and fewer defects.


The Carbonization Process: Color Through Heat

Carbonization is what sets this type of bamboo flooring apart. Unlike stained wood, where color is added artificially, carbonized bamboo gets its warm tones through heat and pressure. The bamboo strips or fibers are steamed at high temperatures, typically between 150°C and 200°C. This process caramelizes the natural sugars in the bamboo, giving it that signature honey-brown to coffee-colored hue.

However, this thermal treatment also softens the bamboo slightly. Carbonized bamboo is generally 10–20% less hard than natural (non-carbonized) bamboo. That’s why everything that follows—from adhesive selection to finishing—must be optimized to preserve durability.


From Color to Structure: Manufacturing Methods Matter

Carbonized bamboo can be manufactured into three main types of flooring:

  • Horizontal Grain: Strips are laid flat, highlighting the bamboo’s natural “knuckle” pattern. The carbonized version has rich, visible grain with a softer look.

Of the three, strand woven carbonized bamboo offers the best durability. The heat-treated fibers are stabilized with resin during compression, preserving their color while reinforcing their structure. This makes it a prime choice for high-traffic areas or commercial applications where performance and aesthetics both matter.


Adhesives: Holding It All Together Safely

Just as critical as the bamboo itself is the adhesive used to bond the flooring. Especially in strand woven carbonized bamboo, glue makes up a significant portion of the product by weight—often 10–15%.

Premium manufacturers use low-VOC, formaldehyde-free adhesives that comply with CARB Phase 2, E0, or E1 emission standards. These adhesives ensure that the flooring remains safe for indoor environments, even after years of use.

Cheaper alternatives may use urea-formaldehyde resins to cut costs, but not only do they pose health concerns—they also degrade faster over time. In carbonized bamboo, where the heat treatment can already reduce fiber rigidity, poor-quality glue can lead to delamination, warping, or cracking.


Lacquer Finishing: Protecting the Warmth

The rich tones of carbonized bamboo deserve more than just visual appreciation—they need protection. That’s where lacquer and finishing systems come in.

High-end carbonized bamboo flooring is coated with multiple layers of UV-cured polyurethane lacquer, often enhanced with aluminum oxide for scratch resistance. These coatings protect against:

  • Everyday scratches and scuffs

Carbonization can introduce variability in fiber behavior, so careful calibration of processing machines, heat treatment chambers, and finishing lines is essential. Premium manufacturers may reject up to 10% of output to maintain quality standards—something budget brands often skip.


Maintenance Tips for Long-Term Beauty

Carbonized bamboo flooring, when made well, can last 20–25 years or more. But it needs proper care to stay looking its best:

  1. Avoid standing water – Use a damp mop, not a wet one.
  2. Use furniture pads – Protect the softer surface from dents.
  3. Sweep regularly – Grit and dirt can scratch the lacquer.
  4. Protect from direct sunlight – Use curtains or UV-protective film to minimize fading.
  5. Recoat when needed – A professional screen and recoat can refresh the surface every 7–10 years.
